Mentioned for the first time in 1824, Martinez grew out of a ferry port that provided an exclusive crossing of the Carquinez Strait. While it was only named 25 years after serving as a way station during the CA Gold Rush, it quickly became the county seat but had to wait another 26 years before becoming a city as it needed to register enough voters. This was achieved in 1876.
Martinez has remained a hidden treasure with its large number of preserved old buildings from the early 20th century and antique shops in the downtown area where it offers a unique mix of retail, service, entertainment, breweries and dining experiences. It even has its own drink “Martini” which was invented in a local Saloon as the story goes.
As an up and coming city, Martinez has modernized both its infrastructure and its downtown area to become a cultural-historical attraction as the home of the John Muir Festival Center. The city has a vibrant cultural scene with a 1000-seat Marina Amphitheater, a 500-seat indoor theater, Martinez Opera, live music and the Magic Dinner Theater. It was also selected as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Its unique location on the southern shore of the Carquinez Straight allows for a mild Mediterranean climate that invites for outdoor living with its 16 city parks and a vast Marina along the water front.
Living in Martinez provides access to the Amtrak line which meanders along the water front between the Bay Area and Sacramento thereby allowing commuters an alternative access to regional city centers such as San Francisco or San Jose.
